Calvin Klein: Spring 2009 Ready-to-Wear

[upbeat music]

I ve been a fan of Calvin Klein for years,

of course growing up with, you know,

wanting to be a mini-Kate Moss and everything like that.

When he was at Gucci,

Francisco Costa was all steamy sex and sensuality.

Since he came to Calvin Klein,

he s gotten in touch with his inner architect.

[Interviewer] What was inspiring you?

I actually started with fall,

you know, Goude when he did all those wonderful pictures,

you know that he actually just broke down the pictures.

[Interviewer] Of Grace Jones.

Yeah it was Grace Jones.

It was kind of my inspiration there.

So I took the fall show and I cut it apart,

and I start laying volumes,

automatically it became a little sharp edged.

And that s what I want to create again,

but with soft fabrics.

Soft geometry.

It s pretty cool.

The fact that he could get the fabric to do that

is incredible.

The shapes, incredible.

The first thing I thought is,

If Frank Lloyd Wright designed women s clothing,

this is exactly what we would get.

[Interviewer] Already being described as soft geometry.

What do you think that means in clothes?

Purity, and also we don t want to touch our reality,

we should always find a way to escape reality.

It s architectural, in my way.

To me it was Jackie O in the future.

You could see the classic lines,

but taken to another level.

Francisco just, he just got it.

That architectural, structural thing,

married to the romance of it.

It was just an amazing combination, and I was like,

Oh my god, I m in heaven right now.

[Interviewer] And the metallics, the netting?

The metallics aren t new, you know?

For 40 years, you know the high line, you know.

It felt so appropriate to take the whole collection

through a very clear sort of state.

[Interviewer] Astrid said Jackie Onassis in the future.

That s rather nice, isn t it?

Yeah, perhaps, cause it s very polished,

but it s very Calvin, it s very minimal at the same time.

[Interviewer] How do you feel about clothes

that stand away from the body like that?

I think it s just really nice to wear something

that s creative and that makes a statement.

I would like to wear those clothes.

[Interviewer] And if you want to wear it,

then he s done his job, hasn t he?

Yeah, exactly.

I get to sit back and say, Wow, it s pretty amazing.

I know that guy who did that.
