(classical piano music)

We were in Washington Square Park in the 20 s

and the women re-appropriating their wardrobes

into new clothes.

It was really taking the classic pieces

that a girl would have in her wardrobe,

classic jackets, classic coats, skirts

and maybe she had it a little too long.

And she wanted to make something new

so she took those classic pieces and

patterned them together and

re-appropriated into something newer.

I think that idea is refreshing that somebody

would actually just use the clothing they already have.

As opposed to go out and buy something new.

And, also, it s speaking to buying something

that s really well made initially

and then using it for a long time.

There s so much handwork went into a lot of pieces.

And so much pattern work too.

You d think like you d maybe just take the jacket,

and the coat, and the skirt and

you just like sew it together.

There s so much work that went into all those pieces.
