Narciso Rodriguez: Spring 2010 Ready-to-Wear

Millions of Americans saw and enjoyed District 9,

but the movie has a special significance

for Narciso Rodriguez.

It was a starting point of his latest collection.

[upbeat music]

[Narciso] I was walking down the street

and I saw the posters for District 9,

and I was so curious cause it was this black shape,

with this alien figure.

But there was something very sexy about it.

I don t know, it was a very sexy alien to me.

[Tim] Taking the clothes away from the body,

I thought was a really nice touch.

[Ikram] I loved the loose fit he did.

Nothing beats that feeling of wanting to have every piece,

even if doesn t work in your lifestyle.

Just wanting to have it because it s so exciting,

and so new, and so beautiful.

[Sarah] I thought he used a light hand tonight,

and that was the spirit

that I took away from the collection.

He took all of the architectural lines

that he uses in his clothes and lightened it up.

He made it feminine.

[upbeat music]

I definitely think there s a

new spirit to this collection,

it s much more relaxed,

it s about the body underneath these floating volumes.

A little bit alien, a little bit angelic.

I wanted something very sleek,

but something that was very romantic as well.

It s more romantic but I think it s in his vocabulary

because he does care about proportions

and geometry of the lines.

But he didn t veer from that.

In the fabrics he chose and the way he coveted them.

An ease to it that said, I ve got your evening,

because I am actually perfect.

And you don t actually have to be perfect to wear it

because a lot of very curvy,

normal women wear those clothes.

I can t work out what the print is.

Alien, alien feathers, digitize.

[Tim] Always an essential avenue.

[Narcisso] Romantic but not recognizable.

Narciso can do print but we ve never seen

print the way he did that.

It was something sort of romantic and poetic about it.

Without losing it s hardcore street sense

and modernness, and I thought it was absolutely divine.

[Tim] You always draw these things in your collections

from stuff that s going on around you in your life.

Now why do you have this feeling

right now for alien otherness?

[Narciso] I am in a great place in my career

and in my personal life, and you know,

I m looking to the future and new adventures,

and maybe that s part of the inspiration too.

[audience applauding]
