Versace: Spring 2010 Ready-to-Wear

This is kind of my Italian family,

so it s like going to Thanksgiving for the holidays.

One thing defines Donatella s new collection for Versace,

the softness with the edge.

That describes her, as well.

Donatella just told me Tim Burton s movie

of Alice in Wonderland was an influence.

What did she say to you?

Sexy, gorgeous Versace girls.

[Tim] So not much different from usual.

For me, big difference, we ve not done any smoky eyes,

it s a lot lighter and a kind of rosy cheeks,

so it is actually a big change for us.

(pulsing techno music)

What I did, I took element from the fairytale,

like the clock or the cards or the rabbits

and I put it to the broth of Versace together.

It felt like a sort of armor for party warriors

or something with the cutouts and the chain mail details.

It kept reminding me of like a sweet, hot Barbarella.

You know, the Plexi, there was kind of a techno element,

a digitized print.

It felt like the kind of almost quintessential Versace.

[Tim] The shoes are very, very tall,

and the dresses are very, very short.

Is that a Versace look for you?

I think it s absolutely a knockout, drop dead look

for younger, beautiful women.

I m a mom.

I m an old mom.

[Tim] So is she!

(laughing)

So is Donatella.

She does get in those short skirts and high heels though.

Don t let her kid you.

This kind of cyber scuba thing that s going on.

I kind of like that plastic

with swimming costumes underneath,

kind of that Palazzo Versace idea

of coming out of the hotel with the chandelier

and going onto the beach.

I am really quite amazed at her knowledge

and her sense of what works on a girl.

[Tim] It was very daring to put studs on chiffon

in the evening wear.

Well, that will be something tougher.

[Tim] Do you think it s different

when a woman does clothes like that

from when a man does clothes like that?

Well, I definitely think Donatella,

she knows what looks good.

Men kind of just wanna have

that kind of like far fetched fantasy,

and she won t stand for that.

[Tim] In the words of Tim Gunn, she makes it work.

She does make it work.
