Anna Sui: Spring 2013 Ready-to-Wear

[Michele] She always does a really good balance

between the feminine and the street punk thing.

It s never completely hard

it always has a little girly thing to it.

[powerful music]

[Tim] I ve said it before, and I ll say it again

an Anna Sui show is an education.

This particular one is a mash-up of the

punkest rock and the highest culture.

It s like The Clash were playing in the most beautifully

decorated room in 19th century Paris.

[powerful music]

[Anna] I had this dream about a friend of mine

and she used to dress Victorian Punk.

She d find these beautiful Victorian blouses

and wear them with her bondage pants.

So I thought that s the show,

that s how I m going to do it this time.

I find there s always a lot of

autobiographical elements in Anna s work.

Mixing all the like punk hardware

the cameo skull, sort of, dog-collars.

She s incredible at mixing those references.

[Todd] That s a zenith of Anna s cleverness

because she combined all these strange sensibilities

and time frames and textiles and textures

and she came up with something purely Anna

and really gorgeous.

[Anna] Punk was my favorite period of time.

Loved how people looked so alien, so different,

so against the grain, which is kind of what I m about.

[Andrew] Anna s so feminine and so romantic

in terms of her approach to fashion,

so even when she does something as hardcore as punk

it s always pretty-fied.

Anna s so known for her Victoriana

so it was a great pairing of those two influences

in this particular collection.

[Tim] Where do you think she sits in New York Fashion?

[Todd] For me it s straight up ingenuity

and dedication and skill

and brilliance.

Very high.

I really am a serious fan of Anna

the person, and her work.

I think it s spectacular.
