I have this love for the 60s, and that kind of era,

and this was picking up from a lot of that,

and I just fell in love a little bit.

(rock music)

A Marc Jacobs show is always fast and precise,

but this season the speed and precision

underscored and amphetamine-fueled revisit

of the peak moment in New York s past.

What I loved instantly, the very first look right away

you ve got that amphetamine precision

like a T-shirt dress, and a black and white stripe.

I mean if you notice the program,

I mean we reduced everything to T-shirt, T-shirt, T-shirt,

sweatshirt, skirt, T-shirt, T-shirt, T-shirt.

It did start with this long sleeve T-shirt dress

to the floor that Edie wore.

That s where it started.

[Tim] Are you feeling Edie Segwick in there?

Little bit! (laughs)

I might chop off all my hair. (laughs)

(rock music)

So many designers take a look back,

and then it kinda gets stuck in the back.

I saw so much modern in there.

Like the drop waist, and dresses that look like trousers.

That proportion of the drop skirt,

I was thinking about the bumster.

[Tim] Hip slingers.

Hip slingers.

When I think back to whether it s maxis,

or the factory, or whatever,

you know there s just a coolness,

and the people either have it or they don t.

It s not manufactured.

There are girls that just have it, you know?

And they can make a T-shirt look like a million bucks.

To me, one of the most glamorous times

is sort of an Edie Sedgwick in a Bob Mackie kind of a look.

And all those evening looks,

the sequins that are black and white

that are hard and graphic, but at the same time glamorous,

so they were very youth-quake,

and very old establishment at the same time.

(rock music)

[Tim] Did you feel that collection

was really necessary right now?

I felt it was necessary after the last one.

I felt it s necessary to do something different.

We knew we were gonna be in

for an antidote to last season, and there it was.

The thing that s amazing about Marc

is each show makes the previous show seem tired.

[Tim] Instant obsolescence of fashion.

He makes himself obsolete,

which is a very courageous and creative thing to do.

(rock music) (cheers and applause)
